About Independent Resources

Independent Resources, Inc. (IRI), sponsor of the annual Disability Ball, is a non-profit Center for Independent Living that provides quality services in three different locations – at no charge – to people in Delaware with disabilities. Its mission is to assist persons with disabilities to achieve and maintain an individual lifestyle. IRI believes in personal empowerment, independence and community education.

IRI core services are advocacy, information and referrals, peer support, independent living skills training, and transition program.

IRI Signature Programs:
  • Computer-training for individuals who are blind teaches persons with varying levels of visual impairments basic computer skills including how to access the Internet. At the completion of the course, IRI helps students obtain computers with the necessary adaptive software to enable them to apply the skills they have learned to their everyday tasks.
  • Deaf and Hard of Hearing services. Each of our three locations is equipped with text-enabled and video phones. In addition, two full-time IRI staff who sign proficiently work within this program and are available to carry out these services.
  • LaunchSpace, an entrepreneurship initiative, helps people with disabilities explore the possibility of starting their own small business or expand an existing one.
  • Peer support offers our consumers the opportunity to make informed decisions and achieve increased self-control by networking with another person with a disability. For example, they may work together to learn how to adjust to a newly acquired disability and how to make any necessary changes in living arrangements.
  • Independent Living Skills Training offers instruction, on a one-to-one basis when possible, to help people with disabilities gain skills to enable them to live independently. The course curriculum is based on what the individual feels he/she most needs to be more independent.
  • The Transition Program identifies individuals who desire to live a more independent lifestyle. These may be persons with disabilities or persons with long-term illnesses in nursing, school or other institutional facilities. During a series of bi-weekly workshops, IRI staff and outside presenters educate the participants on subjects such as budgeting, housing, transportation, Social Security benefits and personal care concerns. The goal of the Transition Program is to prepare disabled consumers to become members of the community and to be able to meet the challenges they will encounter.
More than 50 percent of IRI’s employees, as well as the Board of Directors, are themselves persons with disabilities who live independently in the community.

The counsel and support of the staff, based on their own life experiences, is a unique benefit for disabled individuals.
